Cupping Therapy in San Diego: An Alternative Treatment

Though recently made famous by world-class athletes and international celebrities, cupping therapy is thousands of years old. This treatment is commonly used in East Asian medical treatments to reduce pain and improve body movement. Dr. Shani A. Cooper performs cupping therapy in San Diego and La Mesa at Root & Soul. With her years of experience and patient-focused approach, she can help you effectively incorporate cupping therapy into your treatment plan to achieve the best possible outcome.

How It Works

Cupping is performed using specialized glass, silicone, earthenware, or bamboo cups shaped like a jar or bowl. This process can be performed as a dry or wet procedure. Wet cupping involves puncturing the skin, allowing blood and other fluids from underneath to drain. Dry cupping is completely non-invasive and requires no puncture to the skin. During the procedure, the cups are placed in strategic areas and suctioned to the skin using mechanical devices or flammable liquids that are lit to allow heat to naturally remove the air from the cup. This suction will pull the skin into the cup and allow the fluids of the body to flow more freely, improving flow. While cupping can result in bruising, soreness, and other mild side effects, it can provide lasting improvement that patients find worthwhile.

An Adaptive Natural Treatment Option

Cupping therapy is most commonly used to reduce pain and soreness and improve range of motion. Many athletes seek this treatment to improve recovery from regular exercise and injury. However, cupping is also used to address other health concerns such as:

    • Herpes Zoster (shingles)
    • Acne
    • Facial Paralysis
  • Cervical Spondylosis

Dr. Cooper can perform cupping in combination with Western medical techniques as well as other natural healing approaches like acupuncture and medicinal herbs. With her patient-focused approach, she can help you improve your overall health, addressing acute and chronic conditions with lasting benefits instead of addressing symptoms alone.
